Tech Talk: Shifter Options for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internally geared hub has always enjoyed a lot of interest with it's 14-speeds, low maintenance, 526% gear range, high durability, and extreme reliability, but not all riders are aware of the flexibility of bike set-up that new shifter options allow. With a variety of aftermarket options available, shifter options for Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 hubs have never been better.

Drop bar, flat bar, Jones H-Bar; these new shifter options provide the flexibility to use your preferred set-up on your Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 equipped bike.

Rohloff twist shifter for SPEEDHUB 500/14. Original version has a triangular grip shape and gear numbers are molded into shifter grip. Current version has a round grip shape that is more comfortable to ride your hand on and gear numbers are painted in white onto cable pulley for better visibility and won't wear down as grip wears. Current version is also lighter and the clamping mechanism is approved for use on carbon handlebars. Also available in separate left and right hand versions (right-hand version ships stock with new hubs, but left hand version can be supplied upon request).

The HubBub bar end adaptor allows the use of the Rohloff twist shifter on a conventional road drop handlebar. It installs into the end of the handlebar with a 6mm allen key, and the Rohloff shifter slides over the shaft and tightens in place as usual. Compatible with all versions of the Rohloff twist shifter.

The Rodriguez Doohicky headset spacer adapter allows the Rohloff twist shifter to mount onto the steerer tube for easy access and clean cable routing with drop bars. An alternative to using the Hubbub adapter.

The Gilles Berthoud twist shifter for Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 gear hub is designed to fit on drop style road handlebars or flat mountain handlebars depending on the shim being used. Shims are available in 23.8mm for road handlebars or 22.2mm for moutain handlebars. Slot through shim allows brake cable to pass through shifter. Made in France with laser etched gear numbers and GB logo.

The Co-Motion twist shifter for Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 gear hub is designed to fit on drop style road handlebars with a 31.8mm clamp diameter. Shifter mounts next to the stem, allowing full use of the "top" section of the handlebars and shifting from an upright riding position.

Manufactured in-house at the Co-Motion facility in Eugene, OR from 6061 aluminum, then hard anodized black and laser etched for easy viewing. A clean and simple two piece design incorporates two O-rings to seal out water and dust. Brake cable passes through slot inside shifter.

The GEBLA Rohbox is a ratcheting shift box for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 14-speed internal gear hub that allows shifting with trigger shifters on a flat bar or road brake/shift levers (brifters) on a drop bar. It replaces the stock Rohloff cable box allowing shifting with modified SRAM or Campagnolo shifters instead of Rohloff's twist shifter. Separate levers are used for up shifting and down shifting.

Available separately or bundled with a set of road or mtb shifters.*

The Shift:R, made by Cinq5, is the first thumb shifter available for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB. It replaces the Rohloff twist shifter and cable box. The shifter features separate levers for high and low gear. It can be used on drop bars or flat bars. Cable tension can be adjusted at the levers and the ratchet box. It also allows riders to use full size grips rather than shortened grips designed for twist shifters.
