We built this bike for a customer in Vail, CO who was looking for an all-around mountain bike that catered to some very specific setup needs. He enjoys long rides exploring the backcountry roads of Colorado's High Country and wanted a bike that would take his adventures further into the seemingly endless trails of the Rocky Mountains. His build needed to be reliable, low maintenance, and capable enough for all-day rides combining dirt and pavement. For this build, comfort was a top priority for our customer given distress caused by arthritis in his hands.
When a customer told us he was planning to tour through Europe on a cargo bike, we knew we were in for a fun and unique project. Cargo bikes are perfect for hauling plenty of gear, but can be cumbersome on long distance rides or hilly terrain - not to mention a challenge to get through an airport. While our customer was not concerned with riding fast, he said he wanted a cargo bike that was comfortable, durable, and versatile enough to get him and his gear across a continent.
Singlespeed mountain biking has gained a devoted following in recent years, as more and more riders have been thinking outside the box and opting for simple, stripped-down bikes that let them focus solely on the experience of the ride. The flipside of that simplicity is that the gearing limitations of a singlespeed just don’t suffice on some trails, especially in steep hilly areas.
The Inspired Cycle Engineering Sprint FS trike. At Cycle Monkey, we build a fair number of wheels for recumbents using the Rohloff SPEEDHUB and also outfit many recumbents with Schlumpf gearing systems. Recumbent trike and bike riders have an affinity for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Schlumpf Innovations Speed Drive because of the large gear range and durability of these systems.
Cinelli Gazzetta in the form of a classically styled two-speed fixed gear We built this beautiful Cinelli for the son of a good friend of ours who wanted a fixed gear commuter bike with classic styling. We started with the bright red Gazzetta steel track frameset and added mostly polished silver parts and a two-speed Schlumpf Innovations Mountain Drive.
Masuelli Bamboo/Carbon profile viewThis carbon fiber and bamboo frame was built by local Bay Area frame builder Masuelli Bikes. Neil wanted a bamboo bike partially as a novelty and partially based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from customers riding on the material. He had also been looking for a platform to try out the Sturmey Archer S3X 3-speed fixed gear hub and this seemed like a perfect fit.Sturmey Archer S3X fixed gear hub and rear triangle constructionThe goal was to build a fixed gear road bike for longer-distance rides.
It's been a long time in coming, but we finally have an online store at http://cyclemonkey.bigcartel.com/. You can find all the Rohloff small parts plus Gates Carbon Drive belts and pulleys, Magura brakes, Wippermann chains, Race Face cranks and chainrings, and some other items commonly used for setting up bikes with Rohloff SPEEBHUBs. Look for Schlumpf small parts to be posted shortly.
We built this black and white Leader 725 recently for a customer in Toronto, ON Canada. He was looking for a fixed gear bike with clean lines to commute on but wanted to have more than one gear to deal with hills. A Schlumpf Speed Drive was a natural fit as it offers two gear choices without any cables or hand shifter.
