Soma Wolverine Commuter w/ Rohloff Speedhub 500/14

This Soma Wolverine was built up for a customer looking for a solid do everything bike. After his Soma Double Cross was “nailed by a car” he was in the market for a new bike. He wanted to stay with the same brand, but wanted the bike to be a do it all workhorse. It needed to be light enough to haul on and off of busses for commuting, strong enough to carry groceries, pet food, and other acutremonds from the store, and be able to ride anywhere from long paved roads up the coast to light fire road climbs.

Soma bikes are build on three main tenants: “Individuality Made Affordable”, wanting their customers to enjoy something truly built for them without it costing them their first born, “Durability means a Better Deal”, using exclusively Tange Prestige butted CrMo steel they are able to create strong frames that last longer and gives the bike a smooth ride feel, and finally “Keepin’ it Simple”, they have simple geometry that you don’t need an engineering degree to understand and paint schemes that are timeless with no crazy graphics. The customer was not sure which frameset would fit his need so he left that choice up to us. We chose the Wolverine frameset due to its wider tire clearance, stable geometry, and thanks to the adjustable dropouts and tube splitter in the frame, it was compatible with the Rohloff internal gear hub and Gates belt drive combo.

Our customer very early on expressed interest in having an internal gearing system on his bike, but didn’t really know what that entailed. We explained how the system worked, the advantages it had over the traditional derailleur system. In the instance of commuting he would never have to worry about loud gears if ridden in the rain, poor shifting if the derailleur was bumped or knocked while taking it on and off trains and busses, and the peace of mind that he wouldn’t have to be constantly cleaning, inspecting, and replacing parts. The rohloff hub combined with the gear ratio supplied by the Gates sprockets allows for both high speed riding down the cost with a tailwind and steep fireroad climbs without the need for huge pie plates and finicky derailleur setup.
