Monkey Ride: Tyler's Rohloff-Equipped Surly Moonlander Fat Bike

Tyler's monster Surly Moonlander bikepacking rigThis out of control fat bike belongs to Tyler, the newest member of the Cycle Monkey team. Tyler is never one to only go halfway, and this bike is proof. He took Surly's most extreme fat bike frame, the Moonlander, and fitted it with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internally geared hub, aggressive 5 inch wide tires, frame bags, a front rack, and a pair of Salsa Anything cages for the ultimate adventure bike and no dangly derailleur bits hanging off the back. Surly's Bud and Lou tires are huge and aggressiveNo bike shop employee's bike is complete without a color theme. From the headset to the quick release skewers, red accents are all over the place on this Moonlander. We were a bit disappointed that Tyler didn't install red chainring bolts, but he said that would just be showing off. This 4.8" wide tires is ready to take on the gnarliest terrain100mm wide rims give the tires an even huge-er profile. The wheels on this bike are built with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 rear and Surly 135mm disc front hub laced to 100mm wide single wall Surly Clown Shoe rims.  The rims have weight-reducing cutouts that allow the rim strip to bulge through. This wide of a rim allows the tire to spread, maximizing the contact patch with the ground.Tyler's frame bag is only partially rat-eaten.This bike looks mean from any angleA Monkey Bone brake adapter keeps the Rohloff OEM2 axle plate secure instead of using the torque arm option You can find Tyler exploring the East Bay trails on this bike on a regular basis.  He takes it bike camping, mountain biking, and stair climbing whenever he can. Tyler has four fat bikes and knows just about everything there is to know about them.  If you want your own Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14-equipped Surly fat bike, feel free to contact us to make your fat tire dreams come true.Build details:
